This Privacy Policy explains how Expenzee ("we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, stores, and shares information when you use our mobile application and website. By using Expenzee, you agree to this policy.

1. Information we collect
Information you provide
- Account info: name, email, phone number (optional), profile photo (optional).
- Expense data: amounts, categories, descriptions, dates, merchants, and trip details (when you split bills with others).
- Receipts: images you scan; OCR runs on-device using ML Kit.
- Payments: handled entirely by Google Play Store (Android) or App Store (iOS) via RevenueCat. We never see your card or UPI credentials.
Information collected automatically
- Device data: device model, OS version, app version, language, time zone.
- Usage data: features used, in-app actions, crash logs, performance metrics.
- Identifiers: Google advertising ID (only if you enable personalized deals).
2. How we use your information
- To provide and maintain the Expenzee service.
- To calculate budgets, analytics, and split balances.
- To generate AI insights, recommendations, and answer your AI chat queries.
- To recommend personalized products and merchant deals based on your spending patterns.
- To detect fraud, abuse, or technical issues.
- To send transactional emails (subscription confirmations, account-related notifications).
3. SMS auto-detect (Android only)
If you grant SMS permission on Android, Expenzee reads bank and UPI transaction SMS (HDFC, ICICI, SBI, PhonePe, Paytm, Google Pay, etc.) locally on your device to auto-detect transactions. We never upload raw SMS messages to our servers. Only structured transaction fields you save (amount, merchant, date) are stored in your account.
You can revoke SMS permission anytime in Android Settings → Apps → Expenzee → Permissions. iOS does not allow this feature due to platform restrictions.
4. AI features and third-party processing
AI Chat Assistant, AI insights, smart categorization, and AI product recommendations are powered by Google Gemini 2.5 Flash. When you use these features, we send relevant query context (aggregated spending summaries, your question text, or merchant/transaction descriptors) to Google's API to generate responses.
- We do not send your full raw transaction list. We send only what's necessary to answer your specific query or categorize a transaction.
- Google's processing is governed by their Gemini API terms.
- AI message limits: Free 30/mo · Plus 300/mo · Pro 1,200/mo.
- Web search limits: Free 20/mo · Plus 120/mo · Pro 400/mo.
- Smart categorization limits: Free 120/mo · Plus 1,000/mo · Pro 4,000/mo.
5. Data sharing and third parties
We do not sell your personal data. We share limited data only with:
- Google Play Billing — for processing subscription payments.
- Google Gemini API — for AI feature responses (see Section 4).
- EarnKaro and Amazon Associates — affiliate networks. When you click a deal link, those programs may set tracking cookies. We may earn commission on qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.
- Cloud hosting providers — for storing your encrypted account data.
- Legal authorities — only when required by valid Indian law.
6. Data storage and security
Your data is stored in encrypted form on cloud servers. We use TLS for all data in transit and at-rest encryption for sensitive fields. Access to production data is limited to authorized engineers under audit logging.
While we apply industry-standard safeguards, no system is 100% secure. You are responsible for keeping your account credentials safe.
7. Retention and deletion
We retain your data while your account is active. Step-by-step instructions (including if you cannot access the app) are on our How to use & account deletion page. To delete your data:
- Open Expenzee → Settings → Close Account → Confirm deletion.
- This permanently removes your profile, expenses, trips, settlements, and chat history within 30 days.
- Some anonymized analytics and legally required transaction records may be retained for up to 7 years per Indian tax law.
- Export your data before deletion if you need a copy.
8. Your rights
You have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
- Request deletion of your account and data.
- Export your data in a machine-readable format.
- Withdraw consent for optional data processing (e.g., personalized deals).

9. Children's privacy
Expenzee is not intended for users under 18. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be notified in-app or via email. The "Last updated" date at the top reflects the latest revision.
